You really can't go wrong with Nora Roberts. I read this when it first was published & have been replacing physical books with digital. This one is a tear jerker. NR always does a wonderful job with her research so the cultural references to the Middle East are as accurate as possible. Her characters are irrepressibly likable (at least the Hero/Heroine). But NR is never about flighty irresponsible female characters. Her females are capable of living on their own & accomplishing many & great things in their own right. Sometimes there are emotional/psychological upheavals that they get through by leaning on friend or family. But you just know they could do it alone if they chose too. This story is right up her alley. The Heroine could totally accomplish her "Sweet Revenge" without the hero but the fact that she chooses to cooperate with him by including him says everything about the budding relationship. I like this type of story line. It acknowledges that when done right a loving relationship builds both parties & bonds them securely to each other. And if loving the main characters isn't enough, you will absolutely HATE her father for his unenlightened attitude & the overbearing way of life in his home. & it isn't a statement solely on Mid Est culture. If you look around you will see his behavior is in many cultures. It is abusive to the body, mind & spirit (which is where you will find yourself crying). Although it is an older novel It doesn't have that out-of-date vibe. I found it just as enjoyable today as the first time years ago.

There was intrigue, heartbreak and love in Sweet Revenge. The characters were nicely fleshed out. Outlines life in a harem of women who are repressed and owned, body and soul by men who treated them as chattel. The flight of a mother and young daughter leaving all that behind is the beginning of a story that is compelling! I recommend this book. Recommend this book for anyone who wants to read of the twists and turns of this story!
Nora Roberts is seriously a great author, and this book was one of my favorites. I love the concept she portrays, and it's fun to read about other cultures through the lens of fiction. Although it is fictitious, Roberts includes truthful cultural aspects, so readers can learn about other cultures while being greatly entertained.
I liked the setting of this story and the explanation of the culture of the main character. I had to remember I was reading a fictional story when doubting some of the “ steals”. Overall a good summer read and of course, Nora keeps it moving.
I thought this story was very well written all the way to the end... When I felt it was left hanging. It deserved an epilogue to tie things up a little. I don't think there is a second book. So we really are left wondering...
I've read and enjoyed most all of her books, I wasn't disappointed with this one. It was a far cry from the usual locations of her novels. I felt even though she portrayed the traditions in Jaquir as chavanistic and unfair to women, she did admit that to some of the women, it was an acceptable way of life. A fascinating story of a daughter's love for her mother.
It was a good story told in the captivating way that is typical of a Nora Roberts novel. You feel connected to the characters and can vision the exotic locations and people. I enjoyed it and the only reason for 4 stars is because of the predictability of her books. They all have the same rhythm and descriptive terms used to describe the romantic scenes and feelings. Change the names and locations and it is almost the same as all her other books. But a predictable NR book is still better than many other romance novels.
I enjoyed this book as I often do Ms. Roberts creations. However, I was completely taken aback by the vast number of typos I found in the text . As a former proofreader I was first confused and then amazed and then somewhat amused by the sheer number of them . All of them were words that apparently spellchecker had substituted for the intended word such as rims for runs, hoses for roses , lingers for fingers , tip for up , rah for run and shell for she'll. The funniest of these which took me several moments to even figure out what's the use of the word tolling instead of rolling which was placed right in the middle of a love scene so you can imagine my confusion . I won't say that I will never buy another one of Nora Roberts novels again, but this was definitely not up to her usual use of exactly the right word in a given situation . Her vocabulary as well as her charming and varied story lines have given me many hours of entertaining reading . This one unfortunately was entertaining for a completely different reason, and not one that I had previously expected from Nora Roberts .
