I liked this novel very much. Phyllis A. Whitney is one of my favorite writers. I won't write down anything about the plot, because of the spoilers. But I couldn't put the book down, is really gothic romance at its best!

I have no reservations! I really enjoy this story! As a much younger person, I'd had the paperback edition and had given it away! I'm glad to have the hardcover edition!
My least favorite book by Phyllis Whitney......a little too far fetched and non e of the characters had any CHARACTER!
This is the only book by this author that I have read. I understand she did thorough research about each setting she chose for her novels, and her descriptions are reasonably accurate. She never got beyond the stereotypes of Southern characters, however. The result is a so-so mystery.
Imagine what a shock it would be to know you were adopted but nothing about your birth parents or background. Then one day by chance you meet someone who tells you that you have a twin sister living in Charleston and persuades you to visit her and the family. It had been decades since I read any Phyllis A. Whitney books and when I saw this one available on , I was eager to delve into this story. Told in the first person by a (fictional) writer of crime fiction, it came across as a somewhat unbelievable story but coveyed in a believable way by an author who shares how she builds her own plots and characters. I'm sure that Ms. Whitney drew upon her own experiences in those parts of the book. As usual, there were a few unexpected twists to the plot and it held my interest right up until the end Ms.Whitney sets the mood for the setting with beautifully detailed descriptions of Charleston and the Low Country..
I felt like the story was in the current day time. Although I wondered why the characters didn't use their cell phones, rather always a land line. Once I read the bibliography I realized this was not in the current time! Miss Whitney truly has a gift, no matter her age when written. I will be reading more of her stories.
I love reading Whitney mysteries. I read them all when I was young, and now I’m old enough to have forgotten the storylines, so I’m enjoying them all over again.

Whitney is a master storyteller. She weaves her characters and plot in such a way to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the book!
Wonderful story about a twin who was stolen as a toddler and sold into adoption. Many years later she learns her real identity and gets tangled up in a web of lies, surrounding her kidnapping. I remember reading some of Phyllis Whitney's young adult novels, many years ago. I am so happy I came across this done and refound my love for her stories.
