After a few average books in this series, ah, another perfect one. McCarty is back in her form, with beautiful writing, plot, narrative and characters. The hero, Boyd, once noble, is now driven by anger, hate and vengeance. Not surprising after what has happened to him and what he has seen after many years of war. The heroine, Rosalin, is kind, with a highly developed sense of what is right and wrong and the courage to follow what she believes is right. He is dark, she is all that is light. He hates, she loves. He reacts blindly, she acts judiciously. Seriously, this is the only book till now in this series where I don't know who I like more, the hero or the heroine. Boyd is what the years of violence and hardship have made him. He is singleminded and even merciless while doing his job. Rosalin is kind. But it's her courage that stands out the most. She doesn't go toe to toe with the hero or swings a sword or erupts into tempers or is willful to the point of being annoying. No. But her sense of justice, kindness and love make her do things that are quite difficult. She releases prisoners when she feels they were being unjustly punished, even though she loves her brother the jailer deeply. She refuses to be the instrument of bringing her brother down when she is abducted, and tries her best to prevent it. She realizes that Boyd needs unconditional love, and gives it wholeheartedly. And when she finds that he is about to do something very wrong, she confronts him. But even her wonderful, heartfelt speech is not a harangue or a battle of wills, but a statement of her feelings and the truth. Her character is such that you are not surprised that she looks drop dead gorgeous, because she is beautiful from inside too. I loved the interactions she has with her brother, even her niece. Clifford is a wonderful example of how good people get divided by borders and war. Alex Seton is a revelation. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this one, go read it.Tags : The Raider (Highland Guard) [Monica McCarty] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <b>NATIONAL BESTSELLER After consolidating his gains against the enemy English, King Robert the Bruce of Scotland sends his best soldiers to fortify the lawless borders. The Raider Highland Guard Monica McCarty 9780345543936 Books Reviews
This is the 8th book in the Highland Guard series. Generally, there is a battle or a skirmish, spy activity, or some type of captivity that ends up in the PIT. This is a little different story but a relevant one because it displays the feelings of people from very different backgrounds and cultures and how love managed to help them bridge the gap.
When Roselin Clifford was 16, she observed some captives of her brother and later helped them escape rather than see them beheaded. Seven years later, Roselin again meets Robert Boyd, the strongest man in Scotland, but this time she is his captive. The attraction they felt earlier is again reignited and thus begins an intricate tale of Beauty and the Beast--Roselin as the gentle compassionate English woman and Boyd--the determined avenger of his family and hater of all things English. Love is not helped by the fact that Roselin is the sister of his arch enemy.
Readers of this novel should not try to hurry their enjoyment. McCarthy has crafted some very poetic phrases and, if not careful, you will miss those which portray the warring emotions both Roselin and Robert experience. In general, this was an excellent novel, although I disliked the last sexual tryst in the forest and skipped it as the many paged description added nothing to the story except some erotic fantasies.
I love the Highland Guard series for its action as well as its historical commentary. The conflict between Scotland and England is still palpable today.
Monica McCarty's latest Highland Guardian novel is superb. I was instantly drawn into the story and read this book in record time. This is the best of her series, bar none.
Lady Rosalin Clifford is only sixteen but she is simply enraptured with the strong, brave Scot imprisoned by her brother who is a well-respected English Knight. Rosalin is so compassionate and caring that it leads her to find ways to help the poor Scots who look very hungry. Her interference sets off a chain of events which will lead to the Scots escape and her secret longing for their leader, Robbie Boyd.
Robbie is a member of the Bruce's Highland Guardians and he hates the English due to the atrocities they inflicted on his family. During a raid his men manage to capture his old enemy's son and beloved sister and he knows the hostages are going to be useful in bringing about a truce on the borderlands.
When Rosalin is captured by brigand Scots, she is astounded to see the man who was once her brother's prisoner long ago is now her captor. She has secretly desired him for years but Robbie is older and the years of war have hardened him into a cold man who is bent on revenge.
Rosalin wants to breach Robbie's tough outer shell and she does so through her kind spirit. Although Rosalin is exceptionally beautiful, her real loveliness comes from a humble and innocent spirit. I found her to be a wonderful heroine, full of hope and her belief in other is unshakable.
Robbie is enchanted with Rosalin from the minute he sees her and she creates a peaceful interlude whenever they are together. The war, his anger, they melt away. Happiness is an emotion Robbie has not felt in many years, yet Rosalin is able to stir up this elusive sensation within him. This is a very passionate couple too. The tension that builds between them is initiated by just a look.
Robbie's heart is fully engaged but he struggles with his past hurts and mistrust of the English. Rosalin is his conscious and he battles with himself and her regarding his duty and his growing feelings for this English rose. The author does an excellent job of allowing the reader to see how both characters wrestle with loyalties, love and commitment. This is easily the best book I have read this year and it has set a high standard for others to follow.
